Brown Noise vs White Noise vs Pink Noise: Which Should You Use?

The colors — white, pink, brown, and newer arrivals like green and gray — are just names for how a noise’s energy is spread across frequencies. That spread completely changes how the sound feels, and what it’s best at.

- White noise — bright, hissy, maximum masking. Best for blocking sudden sounds.
- Pink noise — softer and more natural, like steady rain. Best all-rounder for sleep.
- Brown noise — deep and rumbly, like distant surf. Best for focus and for people who find white noise harsh.
White noise: the reference point
White noise contains equal energy at every audible frequency, the acoustic equivalent of white light containing every color. To the ear it’s a flat, bright hiss — an untuned radio, a strong fan.
That evenness is its superpower: because every frequency is already “occupied,” sudden sounds at any pitch — a door, a bark, a notification — have less contrast to cut through. This is why white noise is the classic choice for light sleepers and babies.
The downside is the same brightness. A lot of people find the high-frequency hiss fatiguing over hours, which is exactly what the other colors fix.
Pink noise: white noise with the edge taken off
Pink noise reduces power as frequency rises — every octave carries equal energy, which happens to match how our hearing works. The result sounds fuller and far more natural: steady rainfall, wind in trees, distant waterfall.
Because it keeps most of white noise’s masking ability while being much easier on the ears, pink noise is arguably the best default for sleep. Some small studies have even explored whether pink noise during sleep can support deeper slow-wave phases. The research is early — but “sounds like rain, masks like white noise” needs no study to be useful.
Brown noise: the deep rumble
Brown noise (named after Brownian motion, not the color) rolls off high frequencies even more steeply. What’s left is a deep, soft rumble — a waterfall heard from inside a cabin, surf from a distance, a jet cabin at cruise.
Brown noise has had a genuine moment in recent years, driven largely by people with ADHD reporting that it helps them settle into work. The proposed explanations vary, but the practical experience many describe is consistent: the rumble “fills” the restless background of the mind without adding any detail to process. So which one should you use?
There is no medically “correct” color — comfort is the whole game, because the sound only helps if you can genuinely ignore it. A quick way to choose:
- Blocking a noisy environment (thin walls, snoring, street noise): start with white, drop to pink if it feels harsh.
- Sleep, general: pink first. Try green noise if you want something even more water-like.
- Focus and deep work: brown, at low volume.
- Long exposure sensitivity (you notice hiss, or have tinnitus): try gray noise, which is shaped to sound even to the human ear.
Volume matters more than color: the noise should sit just above the level of the distractions it’s masking and no louder. If you notice the noise itself, turn it down.
